I just found something interesting on the Hidden Columbia Facebook page hosted by Anderson Burns and ABC Columbia News. They have a video of the secret tunnels beneath Columbia. Apparently, nobody knows what they were used for. In Whole World Blind I imagined tunnels just like this connecting large parts of downtown Columbia, including the South Carolina State Mental Hospital on Bull Street. In my backstory, I had the tunnels created as a way of hauling granite from the rivers when it was hot in the summer (also a way to avoid mosquitoes which might be carrying malaria). I’m fascinated to find out these tunnels really exist. I got the idea for the tunnels from the large drain tunnel at the corner of the State Mental Hospital.
Hopefully, no bad guys have been using the tunnels in the way I imagined.
